About the Firm

Robert D. Thompson, Founder

(1943-2006)

Our founder, Mr. Robert D. Thompson, a graduate of West Point Military Academy, was a former senior owner of a medium sized Philadelphia law firm, Harvey Pennington, and was the managing owner of that firm's New Jersey office, Pennington & Thompson, until he left to form Robert D. Thompson & Associates, L.L.C. in February 2000.

For almost 30 years Mr. Thompson devoted a substantial amount of his work to the representation of design professionals including architects, engineers and land surveyors. In 2005, Mr. Thompson was honored by being identified in New Jersey Monthly magazine’s first annual Guide to the Top Attorneys in New Jersey as a “Super Lawyer” in the field of civil litigation. Mr. Thompson passed away in June 2006.

True to our firm's history, we emphasize the representation of architects, engineers, land surveyors, and related construction professionals and contractors. In addition to being educated in the law, our lawyers are educated in architecture, civil engineering, environmental engineering, and mechanical engineering.  One of our attorneys is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of New Jersey having several years of practice in the field of Structural Engineering.  Although we are a small firm, most of our attorneys have had "large firm" experience and our group of A&E lawyers is comparable in number to that practicing at larger firms with broader practice areas.

In addition to the firm's focus on design and construction related matters, our lawyers also handle commercial and general liability matters, including the defense of premises liability cases.  Our clients include owners, tenants, management companies, and a concentration of landscape contractors and snow removal contractors.

The firm is AV rated by Martindale-Hubbell and is listed in the Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers in the following practice areas: Appellate Practice; Arbitration; Civil Trial Practice; Construction Law; Insurance defense; Premises Liability; Product Liability; and Professional Liability.

Our lawyers participate in professional and construction related organizations, and frequently lecture and present at seminars on legal, practical and ethical related topics relevant to the clientele we serve.
